How Daylight Savings Can Affect Your Energy Cost

We can help you save energy and money even during longer days! What typically comes to mind when we think about Daylight savings is more sunlight. Daylight Savings time was implemented to advance the clocks one hour, to help bring more sunlight in the evenings and less sunlight during the morning. This simple change in time might not seem like much now, but its history shows that this helped American's save and now spend more money on energy.

History of Daylight Savings

Benjamin Franklin implemented Daylight Savings (DST) in the United States in 1784. This was originally brought into action so we could have more sunlight in the evenings. The invention of the light bulb shifted thoughts of many of the purpose of DST. Studies show that Daylight Savings saved Americans money on their energy bills due to most of their energy costs came from lighting. Today, our energy bill is spread out in a variety of electronics, appliances, and equipment that can drive your energy bill up.

The three components to determine the amount spent on energy are, geography, climate, and economics. During the March and April months the United States saves a total of 1% of energy because of daylight savings. April through October is when Americans tend to use the most energy throughout the year.

Reduce Energy Needed to Lower Energy Costs

However there are ways Dr. Energy Saver can help you save money by reducing the amount of energy needed for you to consistently lower your energy costs. First, it's important to make sure your home is properly insulated from the outside. Heat rises, and without the proper insulation we can lose a lot of our heat to outside allowing air to enter the home. This air that is released is replaced with outside air that cost money to heat or cool. Proper duck work, insulation, and clean crawl spaces are all services Dr. Energy offers to help us save money on energy everyday.
