Before and After Pictures from Elkton
Radon Mitigation in Elkton, MD

Radon Mitigation in Elkton, MD

Before After
Radon Mitigation in Elkton, MD Radon Mitigation in Elkton, MD

The region near Elkton, MD has some of the highest levels of naturally occurring radon on the Delmarva peninsula. The owner of this home was concerned about the elevated risks of lung cancer associated with exposure to radon decay particles. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer, after cigarette smoking. It is estimated the risk of exposure to radon levels as low as  4.0 picocuries per liter of air is similar to that of smoking 10 cigarettes per day.

If you are concerned about radon levels in your home, you can have it tested, and if necessary, take steps to mitigate radon gas infiltration. Here we see before and after pictures of a home that has been retrofitted with a radon depressuerization system. It functions by pulling the radon gas out of the soil beneath your home and venting it into the atmosphere above the roof line where it does not re-enter the home. Regardless of the levels found in your home you can take steps to lower your exposure. Call Lawson Home Services today.

High levels of radon gas are commonly found throughout Delaware & E. Job Stories From Elkton, MD
Cold and Drafty Rooms During Winter in Elkton, MD

This Elkton, MD homeowner reported the rooms were all cold and drafty in the winter. We found what is typical of homes built  up into the 1970s:

  • Original fiberglass batt insulation that has compressed to approximately 3" over the years, and likely yields  an R-Value of 9 or less
  • 1960s fiberglass typically has 60 years of accumulated dirt, dust, dead insects, and possibly droppings from mice or squirrels. You can see all of this in the photographs.
  • Attics built in this era were unsealed in places where wiring and plumbing penetrate the tops of walls into attics, as well as around light fixtures, wall junctions, chimney chases, and pull-down attic access stairs. We found all of these problems (and more) in this home.

Dr. Energy Saver recommends:

  • Removal of the nasty old insulation and a thorough cleaning of the attic floor.
  • Complete air sealing of all wiring and plumbing penetrations, and top plate wall junctions with expandable foam.
  • Installation of air tight protective ceiling lighting fixtures covers
  • Installation of a sealed and insulated attic Pull-down Stair Hatch Cover
  • Installing 17" of TruSoft™ Loose Cellulose which increases the R-value of the attic to 60 (an R Value increase of more than 500%)

Radon mitigation system installed in Elkton, MD

The Environmental Protection Agency recommends taking action to reduce radon levels inside the home whenever the levels reach 2.0 pCi/l or above. Imagine how alarmed this homeowner must have been when radon levels inside her Elkton, MD home were found to be 7.4 pCi/l.

Gabrielle was concerned for good reason, since radon exposure is responsible for 15% of all lung cancer. The EPA has estimated that a level of 4.0 pCi/l in a  home has the same effect on the lungs of the occupants as smoking a pack of cigarettes per day. This woman was being subjecting to almost twice that level. Lawson Home Services installed a radon mitigation system in the basement of this home.

Although there are pockets of areas all throughout the Delmarva Peninsula, R\radon levels are particularly high in the northern parts.  Consider having your home tested for radon, especially if you live in this region.

Looking for an estimate to add insulation to an attic of a two story house- roughly 1500 sq ft of attic also to insulate a new one room space on first floor- about 100 sq ft. prefer fiberglass
Project Location: Elkton, MD
I am looking for estimates to add closed cell spray foam insulation to my attic to make it a conditioned space. The area of the attic is approximately 29'x28' with an small additional space on the southwest corner of 7'x13'. The roof pitch the best I can tell is 9/12. The space is currently dry walled, but I will remove that prior any work being completed. I would like to finish the space after the insulation is applied, so I am not interested in the rigid foam. Happy 4th, look forward to hearing from you next week.
