The clothes dryer in your house uses a lot of energy, more than any other appliance. That's why it's crucial to make sure it works really well. Dryers remove wetness from your clothes by pushing the damp air outside through a special duct tube. So, it's essential to clean that tube regularly, especially if it's a long tube, to keep your dryer running efficiently. Over time that saves a homeowner a tremendous amount of money.

Dryer ducts have a special one-way flap where the duct exits the house, to keep vermin and insects from entering your home through the ductwork. The flap on this duct had become frozen shut by the dirt and lint. Once the Lawson Home Services technician cleaned the ducts and fixed the flap this dryer was working like a champ

Sometimes the flaps on your dryer vent get dirty and don't close properly.  This allows all kinds of dirt and debris to get inside the dryer ductwork, including things brought in by vermin seeking a nice warm home.  That appears to be the case here, in this Lewes, DE home.  As you can see in the picture, in addition to the lint left behind by the dryer exhaust there are seeds and grass, which indicate mice, rats, or birds have been hanging out in this nice warm shelter.

Lawson Home Service's technician cleaned out the flex-ductwork and flap to improve the amount of airflow and ensure the unwelcome visitors did not return in the future to wreak havoc upon this unsuspecting homeowner.

Job Stories From Sussex County, DE
SmartSump Ensures Safe Drainage of Water in the Future

A crawl space is often a place in the home that is overlooked, especially if the crawl space is not used at all.  When Milton, DE homeowner Roberta H. noticed that her floors were cold and a musty smell lingered throughout her home, she decided to call a professional to diagnose her problem.  While at a town wide festival, she noticed a stand for Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva who she decided to contact.

Soon after contacting them, Roberta was met by Delmarva representative Michael Brittingham to evaluate her home.  Michael immediately smelled the must throughout the home, and after realizing the cold floors could be due to a lack of insulation in the crawl space, asked Roberta if he could take a look in her crawl space.  While examining the crawl space, Michael noticed excess moisture, mold growth, and the deterioration of previously installed insulation.  After explaining the status of the crawl space to Roberta, Michael began to talk about possible solutions to her problems.  To eliminate the moisture causing the mold to grow, Michael recommended installing CleanSpace Encapsulation Matting.  This patented matting is installed along the floors and walls of a crawl space and prevents outside moisture from penetrating into the crawl space.  Coupled with this, Michael recommended the installation of a SmartSump sump pump.  The SmartSump is a sump pump with a unique design, specifically designed to accept the CleanSpace encapsulation system for an airtight seal. The SmartSump is built with a unique lid, which, if filled with water will sound an alarm to alert a homeowner to trouble.  Michael recommended that the insulation be replaced and new insulation be installed.  After clearing the crawl space of its previous insulation, Michael recommended that closed cell spray foam insulation be applied.  Closed Cell Spray Foam insulation is an all in one air sealing insulation suitable for extreme insulation requirements.  Other recommended products include Everlast Crawl Space Door, CleanSpace pier wrap, UltraSump sump pump and a SilverGlow R20 insulation board.

After going over the complete installation process, Roberta agreed to the recommended products and Michael called in Delmarva’s Production Team One to complete the installation and remediation process.  After a fast installation process, Roberta’s crawl space no longer had a musty smell and was well insulated, leading to both a happy home and a happy homeowner for the oncoming years!

Newly Installed Tankless Water Heater Saves Milton, DE Homeowners Hundreds

Milton, DE homeowners Kerry W. and Patricia H. found that the floors in their home were extremely cold and that their heating bill was skyrocketing.  Desperate for answers and change, the homeowners began asking around for an insulation contractor.  The homeowners were soon referred to Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva whom they immediately contacted for an estimate.

The following week, the homeowners were met by insulation specialist David Lawson.  Kerry and Patricia explained the problems they were having, and David asked if he could evaluate the home.  After evaluating the home and the crawl space, David discovered that their insulation had deteriorated and was not able to hold heat.  To solve this problem, David recommended the installation of new insulation throughout the home.  Another problem he noticed was that the homeowner’s water heater was faulty and costing them a lot of money.  David recommended that the couple install a tankless water heater.  A tankless water heater can save anywhere from $200 to almost $600 on one’s electric bill.  This is because unlike traditional water heater, which heats and reheats water all day long, a tankless water heater will only heat water when needed.

Production Team One was called in by David once the recommended products were agreed upon.  At Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva, the number one goal is to give you the best product possible and keep your home energy efficient. Thanks to their newly installed tankless water heater and insulation, Kerry and Patricia’s home will be energy efficient and save them money!

Sun Chuter Radiant Barrier Panel System Insulates Selbyville, DE Attic

Selbyville, DE homeowners Brad and Annie L. found themselves in a predicament when they realized temperatures were inconsistent throughout their home.  Looking for a solution, Brad called Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva to come out and install an attic fan.

Delmarva sent out representative Raymond Bremmerman to meet with Brad and Annie at their Selbyville home.  After inspecting the attic along with other parts of the house, Raymond explained to Brad that an attic fan wouldn’t solve his problem. Instead Raymond recommended that insulation and a radiant barrier be installed instead.  Raymond recommended that TruSoft blown in cellulose insulation be installed throughout the home.  Along with this, Michael recommended a Sun Chuter Radiant Barrier Panel System to be installed in the attic.  It keeps heat in during the winter months and reflects heat during the summer for the best results.  Other products recommended for installation included a SilverGlow R10 insulation board and vent baffles.

With the recommended products and procedure agreed upon, Raymond called in Delmarva’s Production Team One to complete the installation process.  With Brad and Annie’s home properly insulated like they wanted it to be, they can continue their days stress free knowing the temperature in their home will be consistent throughout.

Proper Insulation and Tankless Water Heater Saves Selbyville Homeowner Hundreds

After years of great results with their insulation, Selbyville, DE homeowner Jen E. decided that she wanted get a full home energy audit done.  After contemplation of what company to choose, she was finally persuaded to call Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva after hearing they did fantastic work.

Delmarva sent out insulation specialist Michael Tucker to meet with Jen at her Selbyville home and perform the full energy audit.  Michael evaluated the home and realized a few areas of the home were not sealed properly and were costing her money.  Michael also specifically pointed out her water heater, which he stated was costing her additional money.  For remediation, Michael recommended that Jen have the ducts throughout her home cleaned and sealed.  To replace the water heater, Michael recommended Jen invest in a tankless water heater.  A tankless water heater is more energy efficient and can save a homeowner up to anywhere between $200 to $600 a month on their electric bill!

Michael called in Delmarva’s Production Team One and once at the house, they allowed Jen to watch as they installed the products to ensure she was receiving the best treatment possible!  With her home freshly insulated and an energy efficient water heater in place, Jen’s home is more energy efficient and costs her less money than ever before!

Damaged Ducts Saved and Repaired in Lewes, DE Home

Having work done at the same time, Lewes, DE homeowner Elliott P.’s contractor told him that the ductwork had become separated and needed repair.  Wanting an immediate fix, Elliot contacted Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva to come out and fix his ducts.

That same day, Elliott was met by Delmarva representative Michael Alicknavitch to look at his problem and diagnose a solution.  After looking at the damaged ductwork, Michael noticed that one of the ducts had been crushed and needed immediate attention.  To service the ducts, Michael recommended new ducts be ordered and installed and fitted with insulation to ensure the best results for Elliott’s home.

Once the ducts had come in, Michael and Delmarva’s Production Team One met with Elliott at his home to install the ducts.  Never underestimate the severity of a situation! With the newly installed duct system, Elliott's home is now more efficient and will continue to be in the oncoming years!

Flooding and Mold Growth Found in Lewes, DE Crawl Space

A dry crawl space is one of the most beneficial aspects a home could have.  Yet when Lewes, DE homeowners Michele and Edward B. found that their crawl space was in less than ideal condition, they immediately asked around their friends and family for a waterproofing company. They were soon referred to Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva by a family friend, who they contacted shortly after.

After being contacted, Delmarva immediately sent out a representative to service the Lewes, DE couple.  The couple was met by crawl space remediation specialist Michael Alicknavitch, who decided to take a look at their crawl space.  After a quick evaluation, Michael determined that outside moisture was making its way into the crawl space, creating ideal conditions for mold growth and excess flooding.  Luckily for the couple Michael knew exactly how to solve the problem.  To prevent future flooding incidents, Michael recommended waterproofing products such as a CleanSpace encapsulation system, CleanSpace drainage matting, Everlast crawl space access door and a condensation pump.  The combination of these products will keep outside moisture from getting inside the crawl space, ensuring it will remain dry.  To eliminate the mold problem, Michael proposed MoldX to the affected areas and then installing a SaniDry CX dehumidification system to keep the crawl space dry.

With the recommendations agreed upon, Michael called in Delmarva’s Production Team One to complete the installation and remediation process.  The Lewes, DE couple no longer has to worry about water affecting their crawl space and can rest easy at night knowing the professionals at Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva have given their crawl space long lasting solutions.

CleanSpace and SilverGlo Products Save Camden Wyoming Crawl Space

A well taken care of crawl space can take a house a long way in terms of value, efficiency and repair costs; yet the consequences of having a poorly maintained crawl space are dire.  When Camden Wyoming, DE homeowners Ray and Jeanne M. wanted an annual evaluation of their home they decided to contact the professionals at DES Delmarva, having heard good things about them from a family friend.

Shortly after, the Camden Wyoming couple was met by Delmarva representative Raymond Bremmerman at their home.  The couple explained what they wanted evaluated and Raymond did just that.  Upon closer inspection, Raymond realized that Ray and Jeanne’s crawl space was in deep trouble.  With a lot of humidity and water troubling their crawl space, the couple thought they would need a miracle to fix their basement.  Luckily for them, Raymond had the ideal solution.  To drain the water, Raymond recommended the installation of CleanSpace drainage matting which doubles as a solution and a preventative measure.  Coupled with this, Raymond suggested that the couple have  2” SilverGlo Rigid Foam with a Radiant Barrier installed.  This product keeps the crawl space well insulated while keeping the moisture out.

With the recommended products agreed upon, Raymond called in Delmarva’s very own Production Team One to install the products.  Thanks to the professionals at DES Delmarva, the couple’s crawl space is now something to be proud of and will continue its efficiency in the ongoing years.

Delmarva Solves Poor Attic Insulation Problem in Camden Wyoming, DE

Robyn and David B. of Camden Wyoming found one day that their attic was poorly insulated and as a result of that was costing them money.  Desperate for answers, the couple began asking around for recommendations on a company.  They were referred to DES Delmarva by a coworker who just had their attic insulated.  Robyn and David contacted them that day.

The couple was met by DES representative Michael Alicknavitch at their Camden Wyoming home.  After introductions, Robyn and David showed Michael the attic.  After inspecting the attic, Michael agreed that the attic was poorly insulated and needed to be treated immediately.  Michael explained to the couple that the best course of action would be to insulate their attic with TruSoft blown-in insulation, which is a very effective type of attic insulation.  In conjunction with the insulation, the attic was sealed to keep all the heat in and keep it from escaping to the outside.

Both Robyn and David agreed that these suggestions were the best course of action and had Michael call in Delmarva’s Production Team One to complete the insulation process.  Now that their attic is properly insulated, the couple should no longer be losing money and should be enjoying their properly insulated home for years to come!

Torrential Downpour Leaves Bethany Beach Crawl Space Underwater

After a torrential downpour left Bethany Beach homeowner Thomas L.’s crawl space underwater, he knew it was time to take precautionary measures.  Thomas went online to search for contractors to help solve his problem.  He soon came across DES Delmarva, whom he contacted for a free estimate.

The following week Thomas was met by Delmarva representative and waterproofing specialist Michael Tucker.  After a quick analysis of the crawl space, Michael realized that the perfect solution would be to install closed cell spray foam insulation.  This specific type of insulation is perfect for crawl spaces due to its dense nature, which allows it to be more compact.  It also acts as an air barrier and as an effective water barrier.  Michael explained to Thomas how the insulation would be integrated in his crawl space and what its effects would be.  Thomas liked the product and agreed to go along with the installation process.

Michael called in Delmarva’s Production Team One to complete the installation process.  With Thomas’s basement now insulated, it is ready to save energy and take on the elements as well!

Homeowner Finds Cold Spots in her Bridgeville Home

Bridgeville homeowner Cassandra R. found herself in a bit of a predicament when she noticed that her home was colder than usual, even with the heat on.  Looking for a professional evaluation, Cassandra decided to call the professionals at Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva after hearing positive things from a neighbor of hers who just had her garage insulated.

Shortly after making the call, Cassandra found herself met by Delmarva representative Michael Alicknavitch.  After explaining her situation to Michael, he went to evaluate parts of the home that he knew caused this sort of problem.  After analyzing the basement, crawl space and attic, Michael deduced that Cassandra’s attic insulation was wearing thin and noticed her crawl space had an excessive amount of moisture in it.  Thankfully he had ideal solutions for both cases.  For the attic, he recommended TruSoft blown-in insulation and to seal the perimeter of the attic.  For the crawl space, he recommended CleanSpace drainage matting to be installed over the ground floor.  This specialized matting drains existing moisture and prevents future water from penetrating into the crawl space.  He also suggested closed cell spray foam insulation.  This type of insulation is ideal for crawl spaces due to its dense nature and its properties as an air and water barrier.  After walking Cassandra through the installation process, Cassandra agreed that this was the best possible solution.

With the recommended products agreed upon, Michael called in Delmarva’s very own Production Team One to complete the installation process.  Cassandra no longer has to worry about her home being unusually cold anymore and it’s all thanks to the professionals at Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva and its products!

Homeowners Look to Lower Energy Costs in Bridgeville, DE

Many homeowners overlook the effect an attic has on the well being of a home.  A properly insulated attic makes a dramatic difference in terms of heating and energy costs.  When homeowners Keith and Jennifer K. found their heating bill to be quite expensive and their home to be cold, they wondered what the problem could be.  The couple began searching for solutions online when they came across Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva, whom they contacted to come check out their home.

The following week, the couple was met by Delmarva energy-saving specialist William DeLauder at their Bridgeville home.  The couple explained to William their problem and William knew exactly where to begin.  William eventually made his way to the attic where he noticed how poorly insulated it was, resulting in huge losses in heat and more importantly, money.  William explained to the couple their current situation but reassured them he knew exactly what to do.  Michael said that they were going to need to rip out the old fiberglass insulation and replace it with TruSoft blown-in insulation, an ideal insulation for attics due to its densely packed nature.  Similarly, for an added layer of protection William recommended closed cell spray foam insulation.  This insulation has an expanding property and works as an air barrier to seal the attic and keep all the heat in.   In conjunction with these, William suggested a 4” SilverGlow R20 insulation board to ensure the attic stays well insulated throughout the winter months.

With the suggested products agreed upon, William called upon Delmarva’s Production Team One to complete the installation process.  With their attic now well insulated, Keith and Jennifer no longer have to worry about turning up the heat in the winter and losing money and its all thanks to the professionals at Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva.

Moisture Build Up Poses Problem for Rehoboth Beach Crawl Space

When Rehoboth Beach homeowner Steven M. found that moisture was building up in his crawl space and creating a musty smell, he knew he was in trouble.  Desperate for answers, Steven started his search for companies online.  After some time of searching, Steven came across Dr. Energy Delmarva, who he contacted for more information.

The following week, Steven was met by Delmarva representative Michael Tucker.  Steven explained his situation to Michael, who, immediately after took a look at the crawl space.

Michael found slight condensation on the walls and floor of the crawl space which could lead to a musty smell over time.  Michael proposed to Steven that he have a SaniDry CX dehumidification system  installed within the confines of his crawl space.  The SaniDry is capable of removing 109 pints of water a day and can operate in temperatures as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit.  It is an ideal system for crawl spaces.  In conjunction with this a condensation pump was installed as well as an EverLast crawl space access door.  This combination of products will drain current moisture and prevent future moisture and water from seeping through the crawl space door and flooding the crawl space.

With the recommendations agreed upon, Michael called in primary foreman David Lawson and his crew came in and installed the necessary products.  Thanks to the professionals at Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva, Steven’s crawl space will no longer be a burden on him or his home.

Poorly Insulated Crawl Space Leads to Multiple Problems in Rehoboth Beach Hom

As a homeowner, the last thing you want to worry about is the status of your crawl space, yet the crawl space is one of the most important pieces of your home.  When Rehoboth Beach owner James M. found that his floors were cold, he knew this problem was due to poor insulation within his crawl space.  Desperate for answers, James began searching for solutions online.  After searching for a few days, James contacted Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva after seeing their extensive repertoire of products.

The following week Delmarva sent out Raymond Bremmerman to James’ home to evaluate his crawl space.  After introducing themselves, James showed Raymond where the crawl space was.  After a quick analysis, Raymond noticed that in addition to James’ crawl space being poorly insulated, it also had signs of moisture, which could lead to musty smells in the short run and foundation problems in the long run.  After explaining the situation of his crawl space to James, Raymond proposed a few ideas: To fix the cold floors, Raymond suggested the installation of 2” and 4” SilverGlo insulation boards.  These boards are perfect and versatile for any situation.  To prevent future complications due to moisture, Raymond suggested a SaniDry dehumidification system.  This system is ideal for crawl spaces and can pump 109 pints a day, as well as work in temperatures as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit!  After explaining the process to James, he agreed on the products and had Raymond call in Delmarva’s Production Team One to install the necessary products.

CleanSpace Matting and Sump Pump Combo Eliminates Water In Stevensville Crawl Space

John and Karen F. of Stevensville, MD decided to call the professionals at Dr. Energy Saver after noticing after a heavy rainstorm that excess water was found around their foundation.  Worried about the status of their crawl space, they contacted Delmarva the very next day.

Delmarva sent our crawl space restoration specialist Raymond Bremmerman to evaluate the couples crawl space.  While evaluating the crawl space, Raymond noticed water on the ground and signs of moisture on the walls.  He immediately knew what to do and called in Delmarva’s Production Team One to assist him.  Raymond had the crew install a HydroLink drainage system with gravel to eliminate water on the floor and CleanSpace drainage matting.  Next, to eliminate future flooding a SmartSump sump pump was installed.  This patented system has a built in alarm on top, notifying the homeowner when excess flooding occurs, and it is also made to partner with the drainage matting to ensure an airtight seal between the two products.  After installing water prevention products, Raymond suggested the removal of the faulty fiberglass insulation and the installation of a 2” SilverGlo insulation board throughout the crawl space. Finally, Raymond recommended a SaniDry CX as the final level of protection and prevention.  This state of the art dehumidification system can operate in temperatures as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit and can pump 109 pints of moisture out a day!

After a five day installation process, John and Karen’s crawl space is no longer an area of concern and they can rest easy knowing they have the best of the best for protection in their crawl space, all thanks to the professionals at Dr. Energy Saver Delmarva.

Helping with Allergies in Lincoln, Delaware

A new homeowner in Lincoln, Delaware was struggling with his allergies due to dirty ducts left behind by the previous owners. Allergic to cat hair, he was forced to wear a mask in his new home to avoid further discomfort. He reached out regarding duct cleaning to make the air clean and healthy.

Lawson Home Services performed both duct cleaning and Aerosealing in the home. The duct cleaning ensures that all of the ducts are clean and free of cat hair while the Aerosealing stops air from leaking out of the duct work. This has the added benefit of saving money on heating/cooling costs since air no longer leaks into unwanted areas.

Breathing in clean air for the first time since moving in, the new homeowner was relieved to finally relax at home. Saving money in the process is an added bonus!

Should I install flood vents?

Susan and her sister had inherited their mother’s home in Delaware.  They wanted to make sure that this beach home could be enjoyed by another generation and immediately proceeded to make a few necessary upgrades.

The home had been in the family for years and was a few blocks from the beach.  The sisters KNEW the area flooded.  They wanted to increase the value of the home and reduce the risk of flooding causing structural issues.

We walked the sisters through how our Smart Vents worked to decrease the pressure applied to a foundation during a flooding situation.  We explained the how and why of where we installed them and walked them through exactly how installation would work.

In the end the sisters were very happy with the work done.

Also...an additional advantage was they were able to have their home insurance reevaluated.  In many cases the premium for homeowners on their flood insurance can be cut by half! In some cases the vents pay themselves off in the first year not to mention any subsequent savings.

If you are in an area that regularly floods or is at risk for flooding Smart Vents can be a great way to decrease the risks incurred to your home.

An increase in radon level.

Frank had his home tested for radon when he initially purchased it.  He wasn’t worried because he was told his level was 3pCi/L so he thought his home was “safe”.  A few years later he tested again “out of curiosity”--other neighbors that had moved in the neighborhood had installed mitigation systems.  He was told his reading was a 5.7pCi/L.

We explained that the radon level in your home can fluctuate.  Even is you register an average of below the World Health Organization’s recommended level of 2.7pCi/L, that doesn’t mean your level will always remain below that number.

Since the family used the basement of the home often they wanted to take action.  The basement had been finished already but luckily we still had access to a good portion of their floating slab concrete floor.

In the end we sealed as much of the basement floor as we had access to and installed a mitigation system with a properly sized fan to help decrease the level of radon in their home.

Attic Insulation in Laurel, DE

A lot of "Lawson Love" went into insulating the living space addition over this Laurel, DE home. But no job is too dirty for us.

The homeowner asked us to make the living space above the garage more comfortable, year round.  The project was very complex requiring insulation not only of the attic above the living space, but the knee walls to the side of that space as well as the floor cavity in the ceiling of the garage below it.

Lawson Home Services' production team worked hard to get the job done.

Duct sealing and cleaning in Laurel, DE

In Laurel, DE, there's a homeowner dealing with a big dust problem. He tried to fix it by replacing the exhaust duct for his dryer,. But the house keeps getting dusty. He sought the help of the pros, Lawson Home Services.

Lawson Home Services sent their Energy Auditor to check the house. He found the duct work, which delivers the "conditioned" (heated or cooled) air from the heating/cooling system to the rooms had many leaks and holes. This ductwork runs through the crawlspace beneath the house. Suction created by the heating and air conditioning system draws dirty air through the leaky holes, nasty filthy air, right out of the crawlspace (which has a dirt floor).

To help fix the problem, the Energy Auditor proposed two things:

  1. Thoroughly clean out the ductwork
  2. Seal the holes in the ductwork from the inside with Aeroseal™
  3. Installation of an Aspen Air Purifier

An added note: this house would benefit greatly by ecapsulating the entire crawlspace.  Click on the link for an example of crawlspace treatment services by Lawson Home Services.

Duct Sealing in Dewey Beach, DE

Lawson Home Services conducts special HVAC duct leakage testing, required to meet building codes in the State of Delaware.

Here we see a duct which is sealed off and connected by a flexible hose to a special depressurization equipment. This equipment measures the suction it creates inside the ductwork and indicated the amount of air leakage caused by small holes left behind during the initial installation of the heating and air conditioning ducts.  If the leakage is too great then contractors must return to properly seal the ductwork.

Lawson Home Services can provide this same service to any homeowner who is looking to save money on energy costs of heating or cooling their home.  Contact us right away to schedule an energy audit that can show you ways to improve the efficiency and comfort of your home.

Duct Cleaning in Lewes, DE

This Lewes, DE homeowner had an issue with seasonal allergens and wanted to see if Lawson Home Services could do something to improve the air quality in his home.  An inspection revealed a great amount of dust and debris had accumulated in the heating and air conditioning ductwork.

Grimy ductwork is like a garden where all sorts of fungi and nasty microbes can grow.  The dust and microbes are then blown throughout the home whenever the heating or air conditioning system is running. The best solution in this case is Lawson's Platinum Duct Cleaning service which leaves the ductwork looking like it did the day it was installed (maybe even better).

In addition we recommended installing a BreatheEZ™ UVC light. UV light, a form of radiation that damages the DNA of bacteria and viruses, is a safe and effective way to kill microbes.

Annual Maintenance in Milton, DE

Lawson Home Service's technicians recently returned to conduct the recommended annual maintenance for this Milton, DE home, in which we had upgraded the attic insulation and crawlspace encapsulation system back in 2015.

Annual maintenance involves a thorough inspection to ensure all equipment and measures previously installed in the crawlspace are functioning properly. This includes checking for wear and tear of the liner, inspection and cleaning of the Sedona SaniDry™ dehumidifier and sump pump equipment, cleaning and replacement of filters, and checking all lines and hoses to see they remain properly connected and cleaning them if the are found to be clogged.

Just looks at this clean SaniDry™ CX crawlspace - clean enough to dine in.

Cold Bathroom floors and Dust in Rehoboth, DE

The homeowner of this home, built just ten years ago in in 2013 in Rehoboth Beach, DE had three issues she wanted us to address: Poor bathroom ventilation , cold bathroom floors; and dust throughout the house. In addition to the issues the homeowner specifically wanted to address, Lawson Home Service's auditor discovered many other deficiencies during the audit process and prescribed numerous items that could be addressed to bring the home to optimal condition for occupant comfort and reduced energy consumption. These were:

  • HVAC duct cleaning (which includes cleaning of the condenser and compressor coils)
  • Replace damaged exhaust vents for dryer on lower level of house and
  • Clean the ductwork for the dryer on the upper level.
  • Dense pack the garage ceiling (which is directly below the bathroom with the cold floors) with TruSoft™ Cellulose insulation
  • Replace the bath fan in the bathroom with poor ventilation with a new Broan Quiet Fan
  • Install Aspen High Performance Air Purification system to reduce dust
  • Air Seal the HVAC ductwork from the inside using Aeroseal™ duct sealant

Annual Maintenance in Lewes, DE

Crawl spaces are typically outfitted with a sump pump system to discharge any water that may seep underneath the home.  As a result the sump pumps are subjected to water that has a lot muddy water.  Minerals that are dissolved in the water become encrusted on the pump and its moving parts. When this occurs the floats, which turn the sump pump on when water is present, may fail to operate, allowing the crawlspace to become a swimming pool. Not only will this invite all kinds of unwanted vermin and pests, but may cause serious damage to expensive mechanical equipment situated in the crawlspace, such as heating and air conditioning systems.

Who wants to run a spa for rats, bugs, and nasty microbes in the crawlspace beneath their home? It is critical to have crawlspaces inspected annually, to discover issues and fix them before they bloom in major problems that will put a big dent in your bank account.

Call Lawson Home Services to set up an annual maintenance and service for your home crawlspace.

Annual SaniDry Dehumidifier Service in Lewes, DE

Coastal is wonderful but owning a seaside home is not without problems. High relative humidity levels outside cause can cause condensation and moisture inside the home, resulting in poor air quality due to the grown of mold and bacteria, but can also cause highly expensive damage to the structure of the home when the wooden supporting structures begin to rot. That's why the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers recommend maintaining an indoor relative humidity level below 55%

Back in 2017, Lawson Home Services, a Dr. Energy Saver Contractor, installed a Sedona™ SaniDry dehumidifier in the home of this sensible Lewes, DE resident. He was very happy with the results and gave us a five-star rating for each of the questions on the Customer Satisfaction Survey he returned to us. We've been returning ever since to service his dehumidifier.

As you can see in the pictures, the SaniDry dehumidifier is working perfectly to maintain the recommended relative humidity levels below 55% inside the home. We can also see the moisture content of the wood, as measured by the hygrometer as being an ideal 11.8%, and well below the 20% threshold above which fungal growth begins to contribute to the rotting of structural timbers.

Radon at Dangerous levels in Lewes, DE home

Though radon is higher in some areas than others, it can show ups at dangerous levels in areas not typically associated with radon. The EPA estimates that one in every fifteen American homes has elevated levels of radon of 4.0 pCi/l or higher. For comparison, the risk for lung cancer at 4.0 pCi/l  is comparable to smoking half a pack of cigarettes per day.

Studies indicate that exposure to radon gas is responsible for at least 21,000 of the total 127,000 cases of lung cancer that occur in America each year. That's why those wanting to protect the health of individuals who visit or reside inside their homes hire professionals trained in radon testing to test their homes and assess their risk.

The EPA recommends that a home be fixed if its radon level is 4.0 pCi/l or higher. And, because there is no known safe level of exposure to radon, you should consider fixing your home even if your tested radon levels are under 4.0 pCi/l but over 2.0 pCi/l.

This homeowner conducted a self-home test. She was likely quite alarmed to find out that the radon levels in her Lewes, DE home were 2 ½ times higher than the EPA's recommended threshold for taking action to reduce radon gas.

Lawson Home Services is one of the few companies in the State of Delaware that offers both radon testing and mitigation. Call us today, to schedule a radon test at your home. You owe it to yourself and you loved ones.

Energy Audit in Bethany Beach, DE

Many things can be discovered concerning the air quality, comfort and energy efficiency issues in your home during an energy audit by Lawson Home Services.  When the audit is completed you have hard-based scientific data to guide you in deciding what steps you can take to improve the  your home, improvements that will save you money over time, result in healthier indoor air, and make your home more comfortable, and enjoyable, year-round.
The audit will uncover the truth about the unnecessary energy losses occurring in your home - hidden things that have drastic effects on home comfort and energy efficiency. The auditor will test and assess the way the conditioned air you pay to heat and cool is PRODUCED, DELIVERED and RETAINED throughout your your home.

Energy can be lost through small air leaks all across the attic floor, allowing conditioned air to escape from the home, just as if a window were left open year-round. This type of air leakiness is tested with a "Blower Door" device which is set up in the opening of an entry door.

Flaws and leaks in the pressurized HVAC ductwork can also result in expensive loss of conditioned air. The ductwork will be inspected, and any problems noted to determine if the conditioned air your HVAC unit is producing is actually being delivered to the rooms where it is needed.

The auditor will measure the insulation value existing in places like attics, floors, crawlspaces and basements to see how well it retains the conditioned air to maintain comfortable temperatures and keep humidity levels at optimal levels.
One of the most important things our auditor will test is the level of radon gas accumulating in your home. One in fifteen American homes has high levels of radon gas. Only cigarette smoking poses greater risks for lung cancer. You'd want to know if your kids were smoking cigarettes wouldn't you? Then you'd certainly want to know if they are being exposed to similar risks from exposure to radon gas the entire time they are inside their home.
So it makes sense to call Lawson Home Services today to schedule an energy audit and find ways to improve your home and reduce your monthly energy bills.

Dryer Vent Repair and Clean Out in Millville, DE

Here's something in this Millville, DE home we don't see particularly often: the inside of this dryer vent tube had been partially crushed, presumably during installation. This caused a restriction major inside the duct which not only exacerbated the accumulation of lint from the dryer, but also made clean out a bit of a challenge.

No real problem for Donnie Lonski of Lawson Home Services. Donnie was somehow able to straighten out the bent tube in the process of giving this dryer vent a well-needed clean out. Good job Donnie!

Most do not know that a clothes dryer is more expensive to operate than any other household appliance. A lint filled duct only increases those already high expenses even further. We wonder how many home owners went out and bought a new clothes dryer because they thought the old one was failing, when a clogged dryer duct was actually the culprit.

Save money and get your clothes dry a whole lot faster by having Lawson Home Service perform an inexpensive dryer vent clean out at your home today.

Dryer Duct Repair and Clean Out in Selbyville, DE

The dryer vent termination at this home in Selbyville, DE was dinged up a bit. Those rough edges can snag lint and impede the airflow through the dryer vent. That, in turn, drives up the already high costs of clothes drying. The accumulation of lint in the ductwork also increases the risk of a fire. That's why it's so important to schedule regular dryer vent clean out service at your home. The service can be performed quickly and inexpensively. So why procrastinate? Pick up the phone and call Lawson Home Services to schedule a dryer duct clean out service at your home.

Our tech was able to straighten out the flanges a bit to get the airflow back to what it should be.

Dryer Duct Clean Out in Selbyville, DE

This dryer duct clean out job in Selbyville, DE was fairly routine. Cleaning was easy to perform and resulted in an airflow nine times greater than what it was before. That's going to make a huge difference, not only in how long it takes a load of clothes to get dry, but in how much it costs. Did you know a clothes dryer is the most expensive of all home appliances to operate. That's why it makes sense to have your dryer ductwork serviced on a regular basis. It only takes about an hour to do the work in most cases and the service will pay for its own cost in just a short time. So why not call Lawson Home Service to schedule your dryer duct clean out today.

AeroSealâ„¢ Duct Sealing in Millville, DE

Sealing your HVAC ductwork is one of the most important things you can do to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of your HVAC system, as well as improve the comfort and indoor air quality inside your home. This smart homeowner in Millville, DE knew this and made the wise decision to have Lawson Home Service perform the AeroSeal™ air duct sealing system in his home.

Individually, all the tiny little cracks and holes in the HVAC ductwork may not seem like much. But when you add them together the numbers tell the truth. As you can see in the graph, the ductwork in this home started out with combined leakage the equivalent of an 80.5 square inch hole. When Lawson's crew finished the work the leak was less than 1/8 what is was to begin with. Now the air this homeowner pays to heat and cool will actually get to the rooms where it is needed.

A lot goes into the work as you can see. Some of it looks like an invasion by the wild inflatable wacky waving arm man. But that's just the temporary ductwork we set up to deliver the AeroSeal™ product to the ductwork and pull the excess back outside the house. All the supply and return registers, as well as the air handler unit, are sealed off from the ductwork while the AeroSeal™ is pumped inside the ducts, sealing them thoroughly and completely from the inside out. How about that!

Dryer Duct Cleaning in Frankford DE

This homeowner in Frankford, DE needed a dryer duct clean out. Lawson Home Services technician, Donnie Lonski performed the service.

The pictures speak for themselves as you can clearly see the difference between the lint filled duct and the shiny clean one that looks like brand new flexduct. The numbers on the meter also show us  the change in airflow from 494 to 1066 cubic feet per minute - more than double the airflow. This will not only result in quicker drying times, it will drastically cut down the operating cost of the most expensive appliance to operate in the household.

The service takes only about an hour to perform and it is inexpensive.  You get a big return on your investment. That's why you should call Lawson Home Services today to schedule a dryer clean out for your home.

SaniDry Dehumidifier Maintenance in Fenwick Island, DE

Nowhere can dehumidification equipment be more important than in a beach house where humidity levels are typically very high year round. Maintaining that equipment to ensure proper functioning and operation is just as important as having it installed. Donnie Lonski, our maintenance pro guy at Lawson Home Services, was called out to perform a routine maintenance service on the SaniDry™ dehumidifier in this beach house at Fenwick Island, DE.

The maintenance service of the SaniDry dehumidifier consists of a test run of the equipment, clean and replacement of the filter, check the discharge drain line for clogs, and a flow check of the condensate pump (if there is one). In addition to testing the unit itself, humidity levels are measures both inside and outside the house, and the moisture content of wooden structures is measured to be sure the SaniDry™ has been performing as it should.

Mr. Lonski discovered the drain line going from the SaniDry™ unit to the condensate pump had become clogged and needed to be cleaned out so the water would drain out of the unit properly and be pumped outside the house. The filter was services. This unit passed all the operating tests and was functioning perfectly. See you next time!

Annual Maintenance in Bethany Beach

These loyal customers wisely schedule the recommended annual maintenance for the equipment and measures we installed in their Bethany Beach, DE home back in 2020. Though we don't expect anything to go wrong we always want to stop in and have a thorough look in case something has. SmartSump™ pumps get dirty and require cleaning. SaniDry dehumidifiers require cleaning of the filter and drain hoses. We also inspect and test run the equipment to make certain that it is functioning properly and doing the job it was installed to do. We double check all the settings and adjust anything that needs to be changed. We take a look at the CleanSpace™ crawl space liner to make sure everything is still attached to the crawlspace walls and the seams are still holding together. The CleanSpace™ liner also makes spotting other problems, things like plumbing leaks, easy to find, thus providing the unwary homeowner a chance to call a repair service before a major problem develops.
Everything was looking fine at this home on this visit, so Dr. Energy Saver will bid farewell and return next year for the next inspection.

Energy Audit at new home in Georgetown, DE

Lawson Home Services Energy Auditor, Ryan Wurzel, recently conducted an audit at this recently constructed home in Georgetown, DE. The homeowner called because he was experiencing unusually high humidity levels in his home, as were many of his neighbors in the new Hawthorne development on Route 9 east of Georgetown.
The testing confirmed the home was built very tight and needed no additional air sealing. The duct work was sealed with mastic and tape. The problem with this is that mastic cracks and tape fails to hold over time. This leaves the possibility of developing leaky ductwork in the future, having the potential to drive up energy costs. One solution to this is to have the duct work sealed from the inside out with Aeroseal™.

High humidity levels in crawlspaces is to be expected in this Mid-Atlantic coastal climate. The solution is simple: Install a Sedona SaniDry™ dehumidifier in the crawlspace. This homeowner has requested we return for this installation so he can be sure his new home will not start growing mold and the wooden floor structures will not become soggy and begin rotting.

Air Tightness Test Out in Fenwick, DE

One of the many services provided by Lawson Home Services the final "test out" to determine if new construction meets the air tightness standards set forth by the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) used by the State of Delaware.

The rigid test protocol is performed under standard conditions to ensure all homes are held to the same standard.

If you are a building contractor, no matter how small or large, Lawson Home Services can perform your IECC Air Leakage Test Certification.

Duct Cleaning in Georgetown, DE

Kids can be hard on a home systems, especially when HVAC registers are located on the floors of the home. This Georgetown, DE homeowner wanted to reduce dust and allergens in her home. Lawson Home Services' sales person, Michael Medianick, went out to assess the situation.

Michael found dirt, debris, parts of children's toys, and even Goldfish Crackers down inside the registers. Much of the debris had gone even deeper into the ductwork. The inside of the ductwork was a fuzzy mess. The return duct was showing a major mold bloom which was feeding off the moisture in the air and the dirt being sucked into the return register.

Seriously adding to the dust problem was a disconnected dryer vent connection which turned a huge amount of fine lint particles into the air.

There is only one solution when the problem gets this bad: Lawson's Platinum Duct Cleaning Service. When Lawson's meticulous crew gets done your ductwork will look like it was just installed brand new.

Dryer vents can easily become kinked and disconnected. Lawson Home Services solves this problem quickly and easily with MagVent™ magnetic dryer vent connector which automatically aligns and pulls the flex duct tight against the outlet fitting.
Typically in these situations we also recommend sealing the ductwork from the inside with AeroSeal™, an amazing product designed by a brilliant research scientist at the University of California.

Energy Audit reveals energy wasting flaws in Bridgeville, DE home

Finding the places in your home where energy is leaking away and running up your utility bills can be hard for people who aren't trained to see them.  Lawson Home Services' Energy auditors are trained and certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI) and can quickly find the major problem areas in your home that need improvement.

Ryan Wurzel, one of Lawson's Energy Auditors, recently conducted an audit of this home, built in 2009, in Bridgeville, DE. Here are just a few of the many places Ryan went looking for problems:

  • Did you know your dryer uses more energy than any other household appliance? One of the problems we most often find is crimped, kinked dryer connections, and dryer vents that are clogged with years of soggy lint.
  • The attic floors of most homes, even newly constructed ones, are typically loaded with all kinds of flaws left behind during the original construction, that provide a route for air which the homeowner has paid to heat or cool, and dehumidify, to escape through hollow wall cavities, forced by natural pressures inside the home. This valuable air gets pushed up into the attic and then is swept away into the wild blue yonder. Over time this results in thousands of dollars, spent for nothing. You can see in the picture just such a place - a huge unsealed hole where the wiring comes up from the wall cavity below into the attic. Multiply this by every electrical fixture mounted in the ceiling of your home and you see how they add up to leak away your conditioned air.
  • The blower door and gauge shown in the picture, is a device the auditor temporarily installs, typically in your front door. It is a large powerful fan that pulls a slight vacuum on a house to a standard pressure, then measures the amount of air flowing through the opening. This is a direct indication of just how leaky a home is. When Dr. Energy Saver prescriptions are followed this test will be run again to see how effectively all those little holes and cracks were sealed by Lawson's hard working crew.

These are but a few of the many things Lawson Home Services' eagle-eyed energy auditors will discover about your home. In the end you will receive a detailed report from the Energize Delaware Program listing everything that could be done to save you money in the long run. Your out-of-pocket expense at the time of this web posting (Nov 2023) is just $50 after the huge subsidy provided by the Energize Delaware Program. Take advantage of this fantastic opportunity while the program is still available.

Blower Door devices measures energy wasting air leaks in Delmar, DE home

All new homes built in the State of Delaware are now required by code to be tested for air-tightness to ensure the home leaks no more than 3 air changes per hour when the home is depressurized to 50 pascals. We realize, of course, these numbers mean nothing to a person untrained in building science, but this measurement is directly related to how well the home retains conditioned air. Conditioned air is that which has been heated or cooled, filtered, and dehumidified. This is essential not only for comfort within the home, but to ensure utility consumption, and the associated costs, are kept to a minimum.

Lawson Home Services acts as a third-part tester, to verify contractors have done their jobs in complying with Delaware building code. If your home has been tested you should find the certificate posted on the inside of your electrical panel door. Look for the number in the blank labeled " _____ ACH50". But your home may have been built before those codes were required.

Lawson Home Services also conducts the Energize Delaware energy audits for individual home owners. Our auditors, certified by the Building Performance Institute (BPI), will do much more than a blower door test. They will inspect your home from top to bottom, identifying how and where your home is leaking energy and driving up your utility bills. The Energize Delaware report you receive will list all the things you can do to improve your home comfort and save thousands of dollars over the coming years when the cost of electricity and gas are sure to increase.

Call Lawson Home Services to schedule an energy audit for your home. The best part is most of the cost is currently being subsidized by the Energize Delaware Program, and the out-of-pocket expense for you is (at the time of this posting  Nov/2023) just $50.

Energy Audit reveals major energy wasting flaws in Lincoln, DE home

The most common causes of home comfort and high energy bills are hidden to the untrained eye. That's why you should invest in an "Energize Delaware" energy audit before making decisions involving expensive improvements to your home. During those changes you have an opportunity to do it right in regards to avoid problems down the road in home climate comfort, indoor air quality, and energy costs. The Energize Delaware Program subsidizes these energy audits, significantly reducing the out-of-pocket expense to the homeowner to just a fraction of the actual cost. But there are no guarantees this program will always be available, so you should jump on this while the opportunity still exists.

The most common things we find are in the attic and crawlspaces. But occasionally they show up in other places. Lawson Home Services' experienced and sharp-eyed energy auditor, Ryan Wurzel, found a huge air leak resulting from openings left behind by the installation of the kitchen cabinets. Ryan discovered the crawlspace had already undergone a major conversion improvement, from an old-school ventilated style to a modern and energy efficient encapsulated style. This makes floors much warmer in the wintertime and prevents microbial growth on the floor support structures which can eventually lead to foul odors, poor indoor air quality, and even rotting and failure of structural timbers.

Check out the pictures below to see some of the things Ryan noted on his audit, where improvements can enhance the comfort and health of living in this home year round while reducing energy costs.

So why not call Lawson Home Services today to schedule an Energize Delaware Energy Audit at your home.

Duct Sealing in Rehoboth Beach, DE

There are a lot of things that can be done to stop uncontrolled energy loss within a typical home. But no two homes, even two build with identical plans and by the same builders vary in their individual flaws. An energy auditor is trained and had the proper equipment to find those flaws. And Dr. Energy Saver has a solution all the energy loss problems typically found in homes. Our first priority is always the attic, which typically has many gaps and holes that allow energy, in the form of conditioned air the homeowner pays to heat and cool, to escape from the living spaces. One of the next priorities is the HVAC ductwork. Leaky duct work can waste as much as 40% or more of the air your air conditioner or furnace just conditioned. Air in the HVAC ducts is pressurized so even tiny holes become major sources of energy loss. Our crew used the amazing patented AeroSeal process to seal this HVAC system resulting in an 80% reduction in air loss - that's a whole lot!

Living areas are sometimes located right next to parts of the home that are not heated or cooled, such as attics, garages, or other spaces. In this case a skylight was framed in but there was no insulation installed around the framing, as shown in the picture below. As a result there was a significant amount of dry wall surface area that was directly exposed to the hostile temperatures inside the attic. Lawson's crew installed SilverGlo™, a radiant rigid foam board insulation around the framing to stop the energy loss.

An energy audit will provide you with the information you need to make the best home comfort and energy efficiency improvement decisions, the ones that will do the most good and save the most money in the shortest period of time. If you live in Delaware, like this Rehoboth Beach homeowner, you'll be happy to learn that energy audits at the present time are subsidized by Energize Delaware Program. This brings the out-of-pocket expense to just $50 for the homeowner. In addition, many of the measures best for your home may quality for energize Delaware Delaware Program rebates, bringing the cost of improvement to just a fraction of what they'd cost if you had to pay the full amount out-of-pocket. So it makes sense to call Lawson Home Services right away to schedule an energy audit for your home.

Duct cleaning in Milford, DE

Laurie from Milford, DE wanted to reduce dust and allergens from her home. She knew much of it was probably coming from her HVAC ductwork. She knew who to call to get the job done right.

Lawson Home Services sent John Carpenter, our expert duct cleaning technician. In no time John had the insides of this dusty dirty ductwork looking like new.

We also hope John convinced Laurie to have her ductwork sealed as it was quite clearly leaking profusely in many places (see the pictures) Leaky ductwork causes loss of huge amounts of energy when pressurize conditioned air the homeowner has paid to heat and cool is force through hundreds of tiny holes and leaks. The conditioned air quite literally leaks away before it every gets to the rooms where it is needed.

Duct Clean Out and Sealing in Milton, DE

The most energy efficient HVAC equipment made in the world today can not perform efficiently if the ductwork is leaking. The air is delivered to the rooms where it is needed after the heat pump, air conditioning, or furnace equipment has already done its job. But too often we discover ductwork that leaks away as much as 30-50% of the conditioned air. It escapes of the ductwork before it even reaches the rooms where it is supposed to go. That's no good.

Fortunately Lawson Home Services has a great solution, an ingenious product discovered by a University of California research scientist. AeroSeal™ seals the ductwork from the inside out and uses the pressure of the leaks to seal the openings shut.

The results in this Milton, DE home were rather dramatic. Three-quarters of the air that was previously leaking away is now being captured by the AeroSeal™ and delivered to the rooms where it is intended to go. That will certainly result in a big increase of comfort and a reduction of the energy costs.

These energy saving services often qualify for subsidy by Energize Delaware Program (Delaware residents only). Call Lawson Home Services today to schedule the Platinum Duct Cleaning and AeroSeal™ Duct Sealing services.

Energy Audit in Dagsboro, DE reveals flaws in 2014 construction

This modern home in Dagsboro, DE was built just 9 years ago in 2014. Even so the energy efficiency of this home could easily be improved.

The insulation value of the loose blown fiberglass insulation was found in some places to be as low as R37. Another section of cathedral ceiling was insulated to just R7.  Air currents inside this ventilated attic easily blow right through the light and fluffy fiberglass insulation. Our energy auditor even found that a part of one interior wall was totally uninsulated , leaving the surface exposed to the extreme hot and cold temperatures that exist inside attics in summer and winter

The Dr. Energy Saver solution is simple: add TruSoft™ cellulose insulation over top the existing fiberglass to bring the insulation value of the attic to R60. Cellulose is heavier and more dense than fiberglass. It packs tighter so that air cannot wash through it so easily. The wall where there was no insulation at all could easily be improved by the addition of SilverGlo™ rigid foam insulation that not only provides protection from extreme temperatures, it act as a reflective radiant barrier, reflecting heat away in the summer time.

Lawson Home Services typically performs a radon test as part of the residential energy audit. One of every fourteen American homes has unacceptably high levels of deadly, cancer causing radon gas accumulating inside. Yours could be one of them. Find out.

If you are a Delaware resident you should definitely take advantage of the Energize Delaware Program, which subsidizes the costs of residential energy improvements. It's been a great program for those who have benefitted from it, typically saving thousands of dollars. That's why you should call Lawson Home Services as soon as possible to schedule an energy audit for your home and find out how you can make your home more energy efficient and comfortable. You'll be glad you did.

Radon Testing in Ellendale, DE

Lawson Home Services recently performed the required radon testing for this daycare facility in Ellendale, DE.

Radon is a naturally occurring deadly radioactive gas that decays, leaving behind radioactive particles that attach to dust which then lodge in the lungs of humans and animals. This can result in lung cancer. In fact 15% of all lung cancers can be shown to have been the result of radon exposure. This is why it is so important for daycare centers to be tested.

As we can see in the graph below, radon levels vary throughout the day, and from day to day. The average radon concentration here worked out to be 0.9 pCi/l. But we see also it peaked at or above 1.5 pCi/l twice during the testing period. This is why it's important to have professional testing of your home. Lawson Home Services are the radon experts in the state of Delaware. In addition to testing we also install radon mitigation equipment.

If you are concerned about your heath, and the health of those who live in your home, or if you are a daycare operation, you should call Lawson Home Services to schedule a top quality radon test for your home or facility.

Radon Testing in Milford, DE

NO ONE WANTS TO BE BREATHING RADIOACTIVE PARTICLES. MANY UNSUSPECTING RESIDENTS ARE. ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY AMONG THEM?

Lawson Homes Services, the leading experts in radon mitigation on the Delmarva peninsula, has been conducting radon tests across the region. The results are concerning: many homes are showing dangerous concentration of cancer-causing radon gas accumulating inside homes of unsuspecting occupants. This should be alarming to everyone in the region since Delaware is located in a geographic region within the USA, where high levels of radon gas is naturally released by the rocks deep in the earths crust. When this gas surfaces under the foundation of a home it can enter and accumulate, building to high concentration levels.

So prudent homeowners, especially those with children or the elderly living with them, should have their home tested for radon gas. It also makes the best sense to hire professionals to do the job. Yes, you can buy an inexpensive test kit at your local hardware store and test your home. But those who are not trained radon mitigation specialists often fail to place the tests in the proper place. Many move the test around, which instructions clearly tell you not to do. So why not hire the experts to come and do it right?

This Milford, DE homeowner made the wise decision to have Lawson Home Services check out his home. Luckily, the levels inside were only at 0.5 pCi/l, below the action levels recommended by the EPA. But this could change over time. And that's why it makes sense, even if you've already tested you home, to do it again periodically. That way you can reduce your risk of becoming one of the 15% of lung cancer cases that were caused by exposure to this invisible, silent, odorless killer - RADON!

Radon Mitigation System in Milford, DE home

Say GOODBYE to dangerous RADON GAS in your home with a radon mitigation system installed by Lawson Home Services.

This Milford, DE homeowner made a great decision to have her home retrofitted with a radon mitigation system for less than the price of an average home theater system. Isn't protecting your health from dangerous and unnecessary exposure inside your own home to deadly radon gas. Studies show this exposure is responsible for at least 15% of the number of lung cancer cases in the USA. You don't want a member of your household to become a statistic like those people you knew who never smoked a cigarette in their life, and didn't live with smokers, and yet had, or even died from, lung cancer.

Radon accumulation occurs everywhere. It naturally seeps up out of the ground beneath your home and it's particularly bad in Delaware and other surrounding states like Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. So why not have your home tested as soon as possible. Call us, or contact us online. We'll be happy to schedule your test in the near future.

Crawl Space Insulation in Rehoboth Beach, DE

Lawson Home Services inspects the crawlspaces of these condo units in Reboboth Beach, DE every year. It is evident from the numerous photos in these units the crawlspace encapsulation was done by another contractor. The dead giveaway is the simple fact that the crawlspace is not insulated, which is standard practice for Dr. Energy Saver installations. As you can see in the report, it is recommended the nasty/smelly insulation should be removed from the floor deck, and the insulation barrier moved to the foundation walls where it does the most good. Lawson Home Services always installs SilverGlo™ rigid foam board on the crawlspace walls. This not only provides superior insulation that will not sag or fall away and become useless like the fiberglass batts that have been installed against the floor deck in these units. In every single one of these units we find the same problem over and over. Insulation gets heavy and soggy and eventually simply falls away to the floor where it provides a nice home for whatever bugs and critters are running around in there. When Lawson encapsulates a crawlspace it stays dry and clean for years. And since there is no water or food source in there, the critters take one look and head elsewhere.

So why not call Lawson Home Services today and schedule an energy audit for your home. The best part about it, if you happen to live in Delaware, these audits are subsidized by the "Energize Delaware" program. Call now while the program is still in effect and save hundreds of dollars. In fact your out of pocket will be just $50 (in 2023)  and if you are a first responder or military it is just $25. You need to jump on that opportunity right away.

Home Energy Audit in Selbyville, DE

If there were a way for you to spend a little bit of money to save a lot, wouldn't you want to know what it was? That's exactly what Carol, in Selbyville, DE wanted to know. Lawson Home Services Energy Auditor, Ryan Wurzel, recently conducted such an audit at her home. Once completed, each of the energy wasting flaws in her home were all listed on a report, each with an explanation of the problem and how it could be solved. Audits focus on three main things , PDR  - Production of the conditioned air (efficient heating and cooling), Delivery of the air to the rooms of the home through ductwork or other means, and Retention of the air, by air sealing and insulating the floors walls and ceilings, thus preventing the conditioned air from leaking out of the home or undesirable heat transfer (heat getting out during winter and getting in during the summer).

The audits are conducted with sophisticated state-of-the art scientific measuring equipment such and the infrared camera (shown in the picture below, which essentially "sees" heat as it transfers right through the structural components of the home. Here are a few of the things the audit revealed:

  • Part of the vaulted ceilings was not adequately filled with insulation, exposing large areas for unwanted heat transfer.
  • Canned lights mounted in the ceilings provide a pathway for the loss of heat in the winter time.
  • Lack of insulation around the two skylights.
  • Sagging insulation in the belly of the pre-manufactured home allows for air leakage and conductive heat loss right through the floors.

A sales person will now visit Carol to discuss with her how each of these issues can be addressed, and help her decide which measure can be accomplished within her budget.

Energy Audits for Delaware residents are currently being subsidized by Energize Delaware, a program sponsored by the State of Delaware. Out-of-pocket cost of these audits for the homeowner is currently just 10% of the total cost, and just 5% for first responders and military personnel. You'd be passing up a great opportunity to make your home more comfortable and potentially lower your energy bills. Call Lawson Home Services today.

Energy Audit in Frankford, DE

Ryan Wurzel, one of Lawson Home Services's energy auditors, recently conducted an audit at this lovely home, built in 1981 in Frankford, DE. Homes built in the last century typically leak energy unnecessarily.  Often there are uncomfortable rooms in hot and cold seasons. The energy audit is a great way to find these construction flaws and reveal affordable ways to retrofit the home to bring it to modern energy specifications.

During this audit Ryan discovered:

  • Air sealing various structural components in the attic allows would prevent conditioned (heated or cooled) air from escaping right up into the attic.
  • Attic and Crawlspace insulation could be greatly improved.
  • Upgrading to a newer, higher efficiency heat pump, a change from the existing  7.2 HSPF, 11 SEER to a 8.6 HSPF2, 16 SEER2

The audit showed how improvements would reduce the energy bill $1000 annually in 2024, $1500 annually by ten years, and $2500 annually by 20 years. Do the math and you'll find an extra $35,000 in those years you could be using for other things that could increase your quality of life.

And heres the BONUS - currently the Energize Delaware Program still subsidizes these audits so the cost to the homeowner (in 2023) is just $50. ($25 if you are a first responder or military personnel).

It's a no-brainer - Call Lawson Home Services and schedule your energy audit right away.

Important annual maintenance of crawlspace in Fenwick Island, DE

Wouldn't it be nice if you could do something just once and then never have to worry about it again? Unfortunately that's not the reality of things. While Lawson Home Services installs top-notch measures that are good for many years to come, things the homeowner needs to know can happen in the meantime. Certainly nobody wants to go crawling around in their crawlspace every year. And many of us simply are not even physically able to do so even if we wanted. Besides, only a trained professional would know where to look and what to look for. That's why this smart homeowner in Fenwick Island, DE contracts Lawson Home Services to come by once a year and check up on things down in the crawlspace.

In addition to the specific things on his list, Lawsons' technician will keep an eye out for any other problems the homeowner needs to know about. Even though the CleanSpace™ crawlspace liner will contain a plumbing leak and route it to the sump where it can be pumped out, such a leak is a waste of water, energy, and money.
Typically once inside the crawlspace the technician will check:

  • the CleanSpace™ (or other) liner to make sure nothing, like an animal or a careless worker, has come into the crawlspace and damaged it.
  • if the liner is still properly attached to the walls of the foundation.
  • if there are any stains or standing water on the liner.the humidity level of the air.
  • the humidity level and look for signs of mold or rotting of the wooden floor framing members.
  • the sump pump and service it as needed.
  • service and verify proper operation of any dehumidification equipment.

Lawsons not only provides inspection and maintenance for crawlspaces in which we have previously installed measures, we also service home energy and comfort measures that were originally contracted by other companies. You can rest assured we will provide the same level of care and service as we do on those improvements we installed.

If your crawlspace needs to be inspected, or if you need a crawlspace encapsulation to protect your home from the harsh environment of a ventilated crawlspace, call us today to put you on our schedule.

Annual Maintenance in Lewes, DE

Regular check-ups are just as important for your home and they are for you or your car. If there's a problem you want to spot it before it becomes costly and inconvenient. That's why Barbara has Lawson Home Services to inspect her crawlspace, which was previously encapsulated.

Encapsulating a crawlspace is done for several reasons. First, it is to protect the supporting structures from high humidity which would result in the growth of harmful microbes, mold, and rotting of the wood. Second, the crawlspace becomes part of the "conditioned airspace", just like the rooms of the home. This is done by moving the insulation from the crawlspace ceiling to the walls of the foundation and also requires sealing off vents. Next, it is essential to control groundwater. This is done with the installation of a CleanSpace™ liner system which covers the dirt floor, effectively blocking water vapor from entering the crawlspace. A SmartSump sump pump is also installed to pump away and ground water that seeps under the foundation walls. And finally, the humidity is fine tuned with a SaniDry™ dehumidifier.

Once installed you should have the system checked annually to make certain all the components remain intact and are functioning optimally. Lawson's technician will take apart the sump system, clean it as needed, reassemble it, and finally test run it to be certain everything is A-0k. He will also service the dehumidifier, change/clean filters, and test run it as well. An overall inspection will be conducted to make sure the liner has not been damaged by an intruder, animal, or a careless worker. The technician keeps a close eye out for signs of any problems of which the homeowner should be made aware, for example, leaky plumbing, or water from another source. If all looks well he will seal up the crawlspace, fill out the report, discuss and explain any problems found during the inspection with the homeowner, and then be on his merry way.

So if you have a home with an encapsulated crawlspace, regardless of what company did the work, Laswon Home Services can inspect and service it. We are reliable, efficient, and affordable. We also can help solve any home comfort issue such as rooms that are hard to heat and cool and we can improve the overall efficiency of your HVAC system with our Platinum Duct Cleaning service. So why now call us today and find out how we can make your home more comfortable, improve indoor air quality, and get your energy bills as low as they can possibly be.

Annual maintenance in Milford, DE

This job, in Milford, DE, was a fairly easy one. The homeowner had previously installed a Sedona SaniDry™ dehumidifier in his basement. This is a very trouble-free unit and requires only minimal maintenance: cleaning and replacing filters, checking the condensate pump and cleaning and/or replacing hoses, a test run of the equipment, testing the humidity inside the space, and testing the humidity of the air coming out of the machine. All of this takes just a short while. But it is essential to do these things to ensure your dehumidifier is functioning optimally.

Don't forget to call us and schedule your annual maintenance. While or tech is there he may also be able to show you other ways Lawson Home Services can make your home more comfortable and save on your energy bills.

Delaware is famous for its beaches. But it's also famous for its allergens. And it seems to be the worst in the fall. It's no wonder this time of year Lawson Home Services gets so many calls asking us if there is anything we can do to reduce the amount of dust and allergens inside the home. Fortunately there is, our Platinum Duct Cleaning Service.

Most homeowners would be horrified if they could see inside their ductwork. We never know what we are going to find when we open it up and look inside. We take lots of pictures before we start the cleaning. We also take pictures when we are done. The difference is dramatic. The ductworks look as clean as the day they were installed. Bet you can tell which pictures were taken before cleaning pictures and which taken after.

Not only do we clean the ducts as part of the Platinum Duct Cleaning service, we also clean off the HVAC coils of both the inside and outside units. This allows the HVAC equipment to operate at the highest efficiency, lowers the operating costs, makes the home more comfortable during the hottest and coldest weather, and extends the life of expensive HVAC equipment.

Annual Maintenance in Georgetown, DE

The Sedona SaniDry™ dehumidifier was installed in this Georgetown, DE home some time ago. Lawson Home Services was called to do the annual maintenance on it. This service is quick and inexpensive, but the paybacks are well worth it.

During the service we do the following:

  • Filters are removed, cleaned and replaced.
  • The unit is checked to see the settings are correct and have not been changed.
  • We test run the unit and check the output to see the machine is performing as it should.
  • Condensate pump operation is checked and hoses are inspected and cleaned as needed.

As you can see in the "before after" picture below, the unit is set to 43% and the humidity of the output, as measured by a sensitive test instrument shows the unit is maintaining exactly the same humidity. Everything here is A-okay. See you next year.

Radon Mitigation System in Millsboro, DE

Radon is serious. It can strike without warning. Suddenly someone gets a lung cancer diagnosis - a big surprise to a person who never smoked cigarettes, nor ever lived with a smoker.

Radon lurks like a silent killer, often hanging out in your basement. It is odorless, colorless, and worst of all RADIOACTIVE.  It decays into radioactive particles that team up with the dust in your house. You breathe it in and it lodges in your lungs and begins altering your DNA. That's how cancer happens.

The good new is: there is something all homeowners can do. The first and most important thing is to get your home tested, preferably by a reliable company that specializes in radon testing and mitigation.

Lawson Home Services is Delaware's number one leading expert in radon testing and mitigation. We employ the only certified radon compliance inspector in the state of Delaware. With Lawson's you can trust that you've chosen the best to protect you and your loved ones from the deadly exposure to radon gas. Call us today to schedule a radon test in your home. If the tests show you are in the zone for action then Lawson's can also install your mitigation system.

Dryer duct clean out in Millsboro, DE

Most dryer duct clean out jobs are fairly straightforward like this one. Although the before picture doesn't look nearly as bad as many of the dirty dryer ducts our technician runs across, it was substantially blocking the flow of air. This increases dryer run times and runs up utility bills in a hurry. You don't need that.

In addition to the clean out, our technician found something that is fairly common, a split flex hose. These hoses are pretty thin and often get crimped in between the back of the dryer and the wall, causing the hose to split apart like this one did. The warm moist air spews out onto the floor and wall, leaving moisture to condense and form puddles. It can also put a lot of sneeze causing dust in the air. These repairs are fairly quick and inexpensive.
We're pretty busy this time of year with dryer clean outs. So you'd better call Lawson Home Services and let us schedule for a clean out next time we are in your town.

Dehumidification in Milton, DE

You don't want to risk failing to controlling the humidity in this coastal climate. To many owners have learned the hard way, mold will start growing in a heartbeat in your crawlspace in the summer when the relative humidity outside skyrockets to well above the 60 - 70%, threshold above which mold growth is almost certain to occur. Installation of dehumidification equipment in this climate is absolutely necessary. This homeowner in Milton, DE  made that wise decision years ago. He also knows it makes no sense to spend a lot of money on expensive HVAC equipment and then fail to maintain it on a regular basis. That's why Lawson Home Services visits Ron's home every year to check the SaniDry™ dehumidifier that was installed in his home nine years ago.
Lawson's tech are thorough and perform all the essential tasks, changing filters, performing electrical and function tests, and cleaning and/or repairing any components needed. You can rely on Lawson's to keep your crawlspace high and dry. The annual inspections are scheduled at your convenience, and are inexpensive.

Home Energy Audit in Millsboro, DE

It would be a shame if any Delaware homeowner missed the opportunity to have their home evaluated by an Energize Delaware Audit. At this time (Dec 2023) these audits are almost entirely subsidized by Energize Delaware, resulting in a cost of just $50 to the homeowner ($25 if you are military or a first responder). These government subsidized programs aren't always going to be available so you should to act now. There are so many reasons why.

If you knew you were going to be spending $10,000 over the next for electricity and gas anyway, and rather than giving it to the utilities company you could instead spend it on your house, be more comfortable, and have healthier indoor air quality, wouldn't you do that?

An energy audit will provide you a plan to do just that. The energy auditor will conduct an inspection of your home and conduct a few tests. That information gathered during the audit is then entered into the technical software employed by Energize Delaware which then computes all the information. A report is generated which can help the homeowner understand exactly the most effective measures to install, and showing how long it will take for the investment to pay for itself. It will also compute projections showing the savings that are likely to result over the next 20 years. Have a look at the picture below for a sample of an audit recently conducted at this home in Millsboro, DE. That's information this homeowner can bank on!

So why not call Lawson Home Services to schedule an Energize Delaware Energy Audit. The $50 you spend could result in thousands of dollars of savings, improve the value and comfort of your home, and improve the health of the home occupants.

Home Energy Audit in Millsboro, DE - Photo 1
Home Energy Audit in Rehoboth Beach, DE

An energy audit is like a financial report, showing you how long it will take investments in home comfort, healthy indoor air quality, and energy efficiency, to pay off. After that break even point the added savings go to directly into the homeowners bank account.
Like this energy audit in Rehoboth Beach, DE, which shows how investing $1819 in basement insulation and new hot water heaters (after Energize Delaware rebate incentives), will pay for itself in just 4 years, and $1200 invested in an attic insulation upgrade in just 8 years. The annual savings for these three measures is $731 each year (that's $61 a month). This is money you'd have been paying your electric and gas utility companies that you would be investing in the value and comfort of your home while creating a more healthy environment for you and your family. If you live in Rehoboth Beach surely can you spare $61 a month for this value.
S
ince most of the expense is subsidized by Energize Delaware the audit will only cost you $50 ($25 if you're military or a first responder). That's a big payoff in itself.
So why not pick up the phone and call Lawson Home Services to schedule your Energize Delaware Energy Audit.

Home Energy Audit in Rehoboth Beach, DE

That's a device called a blower door you see in the picture. It measures the airflow required to pull a slight vacuum (50 pascals) on the home. This number directly relates to the air "leakiness of the home. In this case the air leaks add up to the equivalence of leaving a 28" wide window open 6.5" year round. Imaging how much warm air is being replaces by cold outdoor air in the winter, or cool air that is being replaced by hot humid outdoor air in the summer. It's like when you were a kid and your mom or dad kept telling you, "Don't leave the door hanging open, we don't want to be heating the whole neighborhood"!
The energy audit will not only tell you how much your home is leaking, but generally the auditor will find out where the leaks are. And from the science we know, most of the time, the worst leaks are in the attic floor, followed by leaks around the rim band, the part of the house that sits directly on top of the foundation wall.
Home energy audits help homeowners plan the best improvement strategy, showing which measures affect home comfort and energy use the most, and which will, over the shortest period of time, pay for themselves and begin putting spendable dollars in the homeowner's bank account.
The best part for Delaware residents is that Energize Delaware still subsidizes home audits. The cost to the home owner, just $50 ($25 for first responders and military personnel). So it's a no-brainer. Call Lawson Home Services today to schedule an Energize Delaware audit to find out where you money has been going, and what you can do to funnel it back into your bank account instead.

Energy Audit and Ductwork in Rehoboth Beach, DE

These Rehoboth Beach, DE homeowners wanted to reduce dust and allergens in their home. After conducting an energy audit it was determined the ducts needed to be cleaned out, and it is always recommended that the ductwork be sealed. Before the sealing is done Lawson Home Services performs the Platinum Duct Cleaning which removes existing debris, dust, dirt, and other pollutants, and leaves the ductwork looking as clean as it was the day it was installed.
Lawson Home Services seals ductwork using the amazing AeroSeal process which seals the ductwork from the inside, ensuring all leaks are addressed since it is the leaks themselves that pull the sealing material directly into the cracks and holes.
The AeroSeal process looks a bit strange. Temporary air ducts are attached to the HVAC ductwork to remove any excess material from the home. The process is guided by a computer system which constantly measures the leakage as it continues the sealing process. Once the leaking stabilizes the system shuts down.

The duct leakage was improved by 65.5%. That will certainly save a lot on the energy bill and will ensure the air from the HVAC equipment reaches the rooms where it is intended to go. The return ducts, being sealed, do not suck polluted, dust laden air in, which helps to keep the allergens down.
A Breathe EZ UV light was also installed in the HVAC plenum. It uses ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and viruses.

Home Energy Audit in Milton, DE

Every home in Delaware can get an Energize Delaware Home Energy Audit for just $50 ($25 for military personnel and first responders). So why would anyone not be calling Lawson Home Services to schedule one for their home while the program is still in effect.
You may wonder, "what exactly is an energy audit". The audit is performed by a thorough inspection of the home, examining critical home comfort and energy efficiency features such as insulation, air leaks, efficient HVAC, and many other important things that can be improved to make your home more comfortable and energy efficient, and can increase the value of your home as well as create a more healthy indoor air environment.
Below is a sample page of the summary of recommendations. On each measure the cost is shown, the rebate incentive discount from Energize Delaware, the savings in energy (BTUs), the Savings to Investment Ratio (SIR) and the number of years it takes the improvement to pay for itself in energy utility savings. Instead of paying money for utilities why not invest it in your home and simultaneously increase home comfort instead?
Call Lawson Home Services to schedule your energy audit while the program is still in effect. Who knows how long it will last, so don't miss out on this incredible offer.

Radon Mitigation in Lewes, DE

They used to think radon was not a problem on the Delmarva Peninsula, especially along the coast. But we now know this information is DEADLY WRONG!

Lawson Home Services has conducted a large number of radon testing in coastal homes and found a surprisingly high number had radon concentrations well above the 4.0 pCi/l level threshold, above which the EPA strongly recommends that homeowners take action to reduce these deadly levels of cancer-causing radon gas.
Radon is odorless, tasteless, and has no smell. The only way to detect it is testing. If you value your health, and that of those who live in your home, then you owe it to call Lawson Homes Services to have radon concentration testing done for your home. Don't put it off.

Energy Audit reveals opportunity for big savings while increasing home comfort in Frankfort, DE home

Lawson Home Service completed an Energize Delaware Residential Energy Audit at this home in Frankford, DE in September 2023. Aeroseal Duct Sealing in Selbyville, DE

Even in brand new homes the HVAC ductwork leaks. And over time it gets worse because the materials used to seal the connections and cracks, mastic and duct tape, tend to break down over time and fail. The problem with leaky HVAC ductwork is that the air leaks out of the ducts before being delivered to all the rooms in the house, leaving those rooms more difficult to heat and cool than the rest of the house. And of course this means higher utility bills and people fighting over the thermostat settings.

A UC scientist, working on another problem, realized the gummy aerosol material he had created would be a great way to seal HVAC ductwork from the inside out. And Thus AeroSeal was born.

Have a look at the photos taken during the AeroSeal process in this Selbyville, DE home. You'll see what Lawson Home Services' tech saw during the process. When the process started the leakage was equivalent to 73.6 square inches and when finished was reduced to just 14.4 square inches, a dramatic decrease of 80.4%.

Call Lawson Home Services today and let one of our sales persons have a look to see if we may be able to help improve the efficiency of your HVAC ductwork. As an added bonus, Lawsons' Platinum Duct Cleaning Service is performed prior to the AeroSeal process, removing any accumulated dust and lint. When the process is done, not only will your HVAC be working more efficiently, but the air you breathe will be a lot cleaner.

AeroSeal in Milford, DE

HVAC Ductwork is inherently leaky, costing the homeowner increased utility costs whenever the HVAC (air conditioning and heating) system is in operation. These leaks also cause some rooms to be harder to heat and cool because the conditioned air is leaking out of the ductwork before it is delivered into these distant rooms. And of course this can result in the occupants constantly fighting over the thermostat settings.

Fortunately there is a quick and easy solution to leaky ductwork: AeroSeal™. With traditional methods of sealing ductwork the ductwork gets worse over time. Due to constant expansion and contraction with constant temperature changes, mastic cracks open leaving wide gaps. Heat causes duct tape to lose its stickiness over time - and it eventually lets go of the surface it was holding together. But Aeroseal is like chewing gum. The brilliant part of the this innovative process is that AeroSeal seals the ductwork from the inside out, sealing leaks that are difficult or impossible to reach with traditional duct sealing methods.

Have a look at the photos and see for yourself. The ductwork in this Milford, DE home was improved by over 71%. That's a difference you won't get with traditional methods. In addition, Lawsons performs a Platinum Duct Cleaning service before applying the AeroSeal. So when it's all done you'll also be breathing air that is a whole lot cleaner.

Call Lawson Home Services and schedule a time for one of our Home Comfort Specialists to visit your home and see if we can make your HVAC more efficient. While there, the specialist may also notice many other opportunities at your home, that can make your home more comfortable and save you money over the long haul. The best part is many of these improvements are subsidized by Energize Delaware program - so why would anyone pass up on that opportunity.

Energy Code Test Out in Selbyville, DE

Since legislated in Delaware nearly two decades ago, builders are now required to meet energy efficiency standards. Lawson Home Services is called in to perform what is known as a "Test-Out", which is a third-party, arms length procedure intended to verify the builder has performed to code.

The pictures below show Lawson Energy Auditor Ryan Wurzel, conducting a duct leakage test, which shows how well the HVAC contractor sealed the heating and air conditioning ducts. Leaky HVAC ducts are one of the biggest causes for loss of energy, high utility costs, and uncomfortable rooms that are difficult to heat and cool.

A homeowner in Georgetown, Delaware noticed significant increases in their energy bills throughout the year. Upon investigation, the homeowner expressed concerns about mold growth in the bathroom and dust accumulation around the supply registry. The following signs indicate that the air quality of the home has been compromised.

The homeowner is concerned about the indoor air quality, allergen, and dust accumulation and its impact on their family's well-being, especially since their son has asthma and has been on a ventilator for three years. Unfortunately, the homeowner has never addressed this issue before.

In this case, we recommended the homeowner opt for Platinum Duct Cleaning service, which would significantly improve indoor air quality and save energy.

Energy Efficiency - Duct Sealing with Aeroseal in Millsboro, DE

Leaky ducts result in energy wastage, as conditioned air escapes before reaching its intended space. This inefficiency leads to higher utility bills and excessive energy consumption. A leaky duct causes uneven air distribution throughout the home, causing hot and cold spots on different sides of the house.

A homeowner from Millsboro, DE, approached us with the concern that his mom's room is consistently colder in winter, and they have to rely on portable heaters to maintain an adequate temperature.

After a thorough audit, our professionals identified that the home had a leaky duct, measuring the initial leakage range of 147 CFM25 = 27.7 sq. in. hole. To effectively address this issue, we recommended duct cleaning followed by duct sealing with Aeroseal technology, a highly innovative process that not only seals leaks but also optimizes airflow, improving the efficiency of the home's heating system. These proactive measures are proven to boost energy efficiency and create a healthier living environment. Post the Aeroseal treatment the final leakage test range drastically reduced to 6CFM25 = 1.2 sq. in. hole increasing the system efficiency to 95.5%.

The homeowner saw a significant improvement in energy efficiency, leading to lower utility bills and a reduced carbon footprint inside the home. At Lawson Home Services, we don't just fix problems; we create solutions that enhance lives.

Our customer wanted to make their home more comfortable throughout the year, with a particular focus on keeping the rooms over the garage cooler in the summer. To achieve this, we implemented a series of targeted solutions designed to enhance insulation, reduce energy loss, and improve overall home comfort.

Attic Insulation and Air Sealing:

  • We began by removing and disposing of the existing insulation in the attic, which had become ineffective. This prepared the space for the installation of fresh, clean insulation.
  • Next, we air-sealed and insulated the attic assembly by sealing all accessible penetrations and top plates with expanding polyurethane foam. This step is crucial for preventing unwanted air leaks that can compromise the efficiency of insulation.
  • To further improve the insulation, we installed a 4-inch layer of SilverGlo™ along the attic deck, effectively creating a robust thermal barrier. This was done in two layers for maximum effectiveness.
  • We also air-sealed and insulated the scuttle cover (hatch cover), ensuring that even the smallest gaps were addressed, providing a complete seal.

Duct System Encapsulation:

  • The duct system in the attic was encapsulated with polyurethane spray foam, which helps to maintain consistent temperatures in the ducts, preventing energy loss and ensuring that the cooled air reaches its intended destination efficiently.
  • Additionally, we sealed the ductwork with Aeroseal, further enhancing the system's efficiency by eliminating leaks that could contribute to temperature fluctuations.

Rim Joist and Sill Plate Sealing:

  • We air-sealed the accessible rim joist and sill plate areas, which are common sources of air leaks and energy loss, further contributing to the overall comfort and energy efficiency of the home.

Cost Savings:

  • The customer was also able to take advantage of the Energize Delaware Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® rebate, which helped them save money on the total balance of the project.

As a result of these improvements, the home is now more comfortable year-round, with noticeably cooler rooms over the garage during the summer months. The enhanced insulation and air sealing work together to create a more energy-efficient and comfortable living environment for the customer. This customer in particular also continues to be a repeat customer for service work.

Creating Year-Round Comfort for Upstairs Rooms and Cooler Garage Spaces in Lewes, DE 19958

A customer reached out to us with concerns about the comfort of their upstairs living spaces year-round, as well as making the rooms over the garage cooler in the summer.

Challenges:

  • The upstairs rooms were too warm in the summer and too cold in the winter, leading to discomfort throughout the year.
  • The rooms above the garage were particularly hot in the summer, making them difficult to use.

Our Solutions:

  1. Attic Insulation and Air Sealing:

    • We removed and disposed of the existing insulation in the attic to make room for fresh, more effective insulation.
    • Using ZypFoam™, we sealed all gaps and penetrations, ensuring the attic was properly air-sealed.
    • We insulated the attic with TruSoft™ cellulose to an R60 rating (17 inches), which significantly improved temperature regulation upstairs.
    • A 4-inch layer of SilverGlo™ was installed along the attic deck, adding another layer of thermal protection and reducing heat transfer.
    • The scuttle landing received a SuperPlatform™ with insulation dams, and the scuttle cover was air-sealed and insulated using SilverGlo™, ensuring a tight seal to prevent air leaks.
  2. Duct System Encapsulation and Sealing:

    • To improve the efficiency of the duct system in the attic, we encapsulated the ducts with polyurethane spray foam (Tight 'N' True Foam Duct Encapsulation). This ensures that the cooled or heated air remains at the right temperature as it travels through the ducts.
    • We sealed the metal ductwork with Aeroseal, eliminating leaks from the inside and further boosting the home’s energy efficiency.
  3. Additional Insulation Work:

    • The attic knee wall was air-sealed and insulated with the SuperKneeWall™ system, which improves the insulation between conditioned and unconditioned spaces.
    • We also air-sealed and insulated the garage ceiling using TruSoft™ cellulose, helping to keep the rooms above the garage cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Rebates and Savings: The customer was able to take advantage of the Energize Delaware rebate program, which provided significant savings on the total project cost.
