The numerous leaks and cracks in the ductwork of this 1964 Colonial Style home in Claymont, DE did not escape the eagle-eye of Lawson Home Services Specialist, Troy Rowland. This home, built over half a century ago, had numerous issues, but this metal ductwork was particularly leaky. In fact it was so leaky it almost went completely off the scale of the equipment measuring it.

But this was no problem for our steadfast crew. They went to work and soon the numbers began falling. When the work was finished the duct leakage was about one-fifth the amount it was before the work began.

Good job Troy, for discovering those leaks to begin with, and  thank you to the hard working crew for sealing them right up. We know this homeowner is going to be a lot more comfortable in the cold winters and hot humid summers to come in the following years.

The underside of this overhang, also known as a cantilever, is directly connected to the floor of the above room.  This homeowner previously had no insulation in this space, as can be seen in the before photo.  The after image shows SilverGlo rigid board insulation installed in this Claymont, DE home, and air sealed by Dr. Energy Saver.  This will prevent air from getting under the floor boards and causing temperatures changes in the room.

Custom Home Energy Audits

The best way to determine what the cause of your home's inefficiencies are is by performing a home energy audit. Our custom home energy audit can help us discover the root cause for your home's issues, and while we are going through the house, we can figure out what solutions we can use to permanently fix this. Before we start going through the home, we will sit down with you to see what your primary concerns are, and we will make these issues a priority. Once we have completed the audit, we will talk with you again to go over the results and our findings. Based on what we uncover, we will make recommendations to fix your home and create a more energy-efficient environment you and your family will enjoy for years to come! Contact us today for a home energy consultation.

Radon Testing & Mitigation

Radon is a naturally occurring invisible & odorless gas that can have a big impact on the air quality of your home. Radon is also the second leading cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoke. High levels of radon gas are commonly found throughout Delaware & E. Shore Maryland and because radon gas cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted the only way to ensure that you and your family are not affected by this dangerous gas is to have one of our experts visit your home and perform proper testing. Radon testing is the fastest & most effective way to ensure the safety of your family. Depending on the results of the test, Lawson Home Services can offer several radon mitigation solutions that will limit exposure to the gas and also ventilate it away from your home. Our radon mitigation methods are highly successful and we always stand behind our work! To learn more about radon gas mitigation and testing call or click today!

Job Stories From Claymont, DE
Enhancing Year-Round Comfort for a Claymont, DE Home 19703

A homeowner in Claymont, DE was struggling with uncomfortable temperatures in their upstairs rooms throughout the year. They wanted a solution to make their upstairs living spaces more comfortable, regardless of the season.

Challenges:

  • The upstairs rooms were too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, leading to year-round discomfort.
  • Insulation and ventilation issues were causing temperature imbalances and inefficiencies.

Our Solutions:

  1. Attic Insulation and Air Sealing:

    • We removed and disposed of the old, inefficient insulation to prepare for new, high-performance materials.
    • The attic floor was air-sealed using ZypFoam™ to close any gaps and prevent drafts, improving temperature control.
    • We then insulated the attic floor to an R60 value (17 inches) with TruSoft™ cellulose, greatly improving thermal efficiency and reducing heat loss in the winter.
    • A 4-inch layer of SilverGlo™ insulation was installed along the attic deck, creating a continuous insulation barrier to prevent temperature fluctuations.
  2. Improved Ventilation and Walkway Installation:

    • We extended the bathroom vent through the roof and installed a structural cover over the opening to ensure proper ventilation, preventing heat buildup.
    • An insulated walkway was provided for access to equipment in the attic, covered with 3/8'' board and vertical insulation retention dams to keep the blown-in insulation securely in place.
  3. Additional Insulation Work:

    • The scuttle cover was air-sealed and insulated using SilverGlo™ to prevent air leakage through the attic entrance.
    • SilverGlo™ insulation was also installed on walls, between floor joists, and in the 8" rim joist to further enhance the home's insulation and reduce drafts.
  4. Duct Sealing:

    • To improve energy efficiency, we sealed the metal ductwork with Aeroseal, ensuring no air leaks and better airflow throughout the home.

Rebates and Savings: The homeowner utilized the Energize Delaware rebate program, saving nearly $3,000 on the project, making these important upgrades more affordable.

Outcome: The home is now much more comfortable year-round, with improved insulation and ventilation that keep the upstairs rooms cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. The homeowner also benefits from reduced energy costs thanks to the enhanced efficiency of their home.

Looking to professionally improve the insulation in a small 4'x6'x4' crawl space to prevent better heat retention in the bathroom that sits above it.
Project Location: Claymont, DE
Wanted to reinsulate my attic. I just bought this house and seems the attic has old insulation that's been wet and dried out and new insulation on top. I don't believe the walls are insulated either. It's already cold in the house and its only 70 degrees.

Insulation for the house
Project Location: Claymont, DE
My home is a split level in Ashbourne Hills. The second attic lacks a good R-value of insulation. The existing insulation is a thin layer of rock wool. The joists are 2x6. Additionally for roof ventilation I see that the only thing is a gap between the roof and fascia board. It may be enough but would like confirmation. There are no soffit vents as i don't believe these homes were built that way. I would like an estimate so I can understand what kind of budget I would need to prepare. There may be some additional small work that is needed that we can discuss then. I can usually be available in the evenings or weekends to meet up so hopefully we can find a time slot. Thank you.
