Job Stories From Cecil County, MD
Attic Insulation in Cecil County, Maryland

Mr. Anderson contacted Lawson Home Services complaining of too cold and drafty rooms, high electric bills, and lack of insulation in the walls. After meeting with our sales representative, Troy Rowland, they created an accomplish list. Don's goals were to lower the cost of his electricity bills and to make the rooms warmer in the winter. After thoroughly inspecting the house, Troy proposed a solution to Don's problems.

To reduce the costs of heating and cooling Don's home and to make the rooms warmer during the winter, Lawson Home Services will remove and dispose of any existing insulation and add TruSoft cellulose to insulate the attic properly. In addition to insulating the home, an insulated walkway was created for easy access to attic equipment, the scuttle cover to the attic was enlarged, and a pull down stair hatch cover was installed.

Homes with Trusoft cellulose insulation generally require 15 to 30 percent less energy for heating and cooling than homes insulated with fiberglass, making it a great solution to lowering high electric bills and ensuring rooms are neither too hot or cold.

Radon mitigation system installed in Elkton, MD

The Environmental Protection Agency recommends taking action to reduce radon levels inside the home whenever the levels reach 2.0 pCi/l or above. Imagine how alarmed this homeowner must have been when radon levels inside her Elkton, MD home were found to be 7.4 pCi/l.

Gabrielle was concerned for good reason, since radon exposure is responsible for 15% of all lung cancer. The EPA has estimated that a level of 4.0 pCi/l in a  home has the same effect on the lungs of the occupants as smoking a pack of cigarettes per day. This woman was being subjecting to almost twice that level. Lawson Home Services installed a radon mitigation system in the basement of this home.

Although there are pockets of areas all throughout the Delmarva Peninsula, R\radon levels are particularly high in the northern parts.  Consider having your home tested for radon, especially if you live in this region.

Cold and Drafty Rooms During Winter in Elkton, MD

This Elkton, MD homeowner reported the rooms were all cold and drafty in the winter. We found what is typical of homes built  up into the 1970s:

  • Original fiberglass batt insulation that has compressed to approximately 3" over the years, and likely yields  an R-Value of 9 or less
  • 1960s fiberglass typically has 60 years of accumulated dirt, dust, dead insects, and possibly droppings from mice or squirrels. You can see all of this in the photographs.
  • Attics built in this era were unsealed in places where wiring and plumbing penetrate the tops of walls into attics, as well as around light fixtures, wall junctions, chimney chases, and pull-down attic access stairs. We found all of these problems (and more) in this home.

Dr. Energy Saver recommends:

  • Removal of the nasty old insulation and a thorough cleaning of the attic floor.
  • Complete air sealing of all wiring and plumbing penetrations, and top plate wall junctions with expandable foam.
  • Installation of air tight protective ceiling lighting fixtures covers
  • Installation of a sealed and insulated attic Pull-down Stair Hatch Cover
  • Installing 17" of TruSoft™ Loose Cellulose which increases the R-value of the attic to 60 (an R Value increase of more than 500%)

A Wake-Up Call in Warwick: Prioritize Your Family's Health with Lawson Home Services' Radon Mitigation Solutions

Why They Needed a Radon Mitigation System:

A family in Warwick, Maryland, became aware of the potential health risks of radon exposure after a radon test conducted by Lawson Home Services. The test results revealed a concerning radon level of 21.5 pCi/L, significantly exceeding the EPA's action level. This level is comparable to the health risks of smoking 40 cigarettes a day, prompting the need for a radon mitigation system to address the elevated radon gas levels within their home.

Why They Chose Lawson Home Services:

Faced with a concerning test result, the Warwick family sought a company offering comprehensive services and clear communication. Lawson's expertise in both radon testing and radon mitigation systems instilled confidence in the family.

What's Causing the Problem:

The presence of naturally occurring radon gas in the surrounding soil is the culprit. This odorless and colorless gas can seep into homes through cracks or foundation gaps, accumulating to dangerous levels if left unchecked. Radon mitigation systems are designed to remove radon gas before it reaches harmful concentrations within the home.

How We Fixed the Problem (Mitigation Process):

  1. Expert Guidance and Collaborative Approach: Lawson Home Services' team of qualified radon inspectors provided clear and informative guidance on radon mitigation systems and the importance of achieving effective radon reduction. This collaborative approach likely empowered the family to make informed decisions.
  2. Tailored Radon Mitigation System: Lawson Home Services didn't just offer generic solutions; they ensured a radon mitigation system tailored to the family's specific needs. This likely involved selecting the most suitable system type and ensuring proper installation for optimal radon reduction.

What's Unique About This Situation:

The exceptionally high radon level (21.5 pCi/L) emphasizes the importance of radon testing and taking action to address elevated levels. Lawson Home Services' role as a trusted partner throughout the testing and mitigation process is also noteworthy.

The Elkton homeowner initially discovered potential dangers of radon exposure through online research. Learning about the effectiveness of radon mitigation systems sparked a conversation about their indoor air quality and the potential health risks. The homeowner had concerns about elevated radon levels in their home, prompting the need for a mitigation system.

The homeowner chose Lawson for several reasons:

  • Research Focus: Their online research prioritized finding a company with a proven track record for both accurate testing and effective mitigation.
  • Certified Professionals: Lawson's team of certified radon inspectors and mitigation contractors stood out, demonstrating expertise and professionalism.
  • Confidence in Expertise: The homeowner's confidence in Lawson's knowledge and commitment to a professional installation process sealed the deal.

What's Causing the Problem:

Radon gas naturally occurs in the soil and can seep into homes through cracks or foundation gaps. Without a mitigation system, these elevated radon levels can pose health risks. The homeowner's concern about radon exposure prompted them to reach out to Lawson Home Services.

How We Fixed the Problem (Mitigation Process):

  1. Initial Consultation: Likely involved discussing concerns, explaining the process, and potentially conducting preliminary testing.
  2. Professional Installation: Lawson's certified mitigation contractors handled the system installation.
  3. Post-Mitigation Testing: A crucial step to verify the effectiveness of the mitigation system and ensure safe radon levels.

What's Unique About This Situation:

The homeowner's initial skepticism about radon mitigation is somewhat unique. However, their proactive approach of researching both the dangers of radon and potential solutions highlights the importance of awareness. Lawson's ability to address these concerns and provide a comprehensive solution is also noteworthy.
